Did anyone else catch Al Michaels gettin’ all high on Pittsburgh during last night’s Steeler preseason game against the Eagles? After rolling out the usual stock film of blast furnaces and molten steel with sparks flying, Michaels and Madden discussed the confluence of the Mon and the Al to make the Ohio. Not unusual in itself, but then Al makes the statement that the aerial shot from the Goodyear blimp “is one of the most beautiful views in the country” and “there are alot of Fortune 500 companies here in town.”

How’s that for a blast of refreshing positivity on a national telecast for our dear ol’ ‘Burgh? It sounded like someone handed him a Wikipedia entry for Pittsburgh before they went on air… which might’ve happened.

  1. I’m always torn about the images of blast furnaces and steelworkers that are shown whenever Pittsburgh gets national coverage. While some see it as a nod to a strong work ethic and the city’s ability to comeback after the steel industry’s decline, I worry that some people STILL think of Pittsburgh this way. How about showing the Biomedical Science Tower in Oakland or the new buildings going up on the CMU campus?

Overall though, kudos to whoever gave Al Michaels the Wikipedia entry.
